The famous English writer Charles Dickens lived more than one hundred years ago. Many of the stories he created were about how hard life could be for children.
Some of Dickens’ stories tell about children being treated terribly in schools, at work or home. At his school, his teacher beat him with a cane because little Charles laughed too loudly. Dickens was barely a teenager when he had to leave school and take a job away from home. His father had spent too much money and couldn't give it back. He used many of his own experiences when he wrote his novel, "David Copperfield".
When Dickens’ stories were first published, many people were angry. Some were ashamed. Such stories as "Oliver Twist" made them think seriously. They understood that children should be treated kindly and have fun as well as study hard. They shouldn't be made to leave home and go to work when they are too young.
One of Dickens’ best-known novella is called "A Christmas Carol". It tells about a very rich man named Scrooge, who hated Christmas. He didn’t like much of anything except making money. But Scrooge understood that his life is better when he helps others and spends time enjoying their company.

Charles Dickens was one of the greatest writers of his time. By many he is regarded as the best English novelist of the 19th century. The fictional characters that he invented are well known today. His best works included “Great Expectations”, “David Copperfield”. He was born on February 7th, 1812, in the family of a navy officer. They often moved from one place to another. Even when they settled in London, Charles attended the Baptist school in Chatham. By 1824 his father made numerous debts and Charles had to work at the Blacking Factory for six shillings a week. Soon, his grandmother died leaving him a solid pension. The boy got a place of a parliamentary reporter at the newspaper. At the same time he attended the Wellington College.

Charles (John Huffam) Dickens was born in Portsmouth in England on the7th of February in 1812, in the family of a poor clerk John Dickens. He was the second child. Altogether there were 8 children in the family and six of them survived till adulthood.

Charles Dickens was born in 1812 in Portsmouth, where his father was the oldest of a large family, eight in all. He got his education at a small day-school and from his mother, who was a well-educated woman. In 1821 the Dickens family moved to London. Mr. Dickens was heavily in debt. The few possessions that they had were sold one by one, and finally Mr. Dickens was taken to prison for debt. Later Mrs. Dickens and the younger children went to the prison, too, to join their father. Charles got a job at a blacking factory in the East End of London. He was lonely and hungry and hated the coarse, rough boys with whom he had to work.
Soon his fortunes took a turn for the better. He was able to enter lawyer's office. He learned shorthand and was able to do some reporting in the House of Commons for newspapers. In 1834 he was taken on the staff of a newspaper, "The Morning Chronicle". In 1836 "Pickwick Papers" came into being.
